There are artists who act, and then there are artists who feel the act. Julie Raelyn is the latter. A theater kid turned powerhouse indie filmmaker, Julie’s big dream is a beautiful duality: to become a regular on a TV series and simultaneously grow her own production company into a force capable of producing mind-opening feature films.
Her journey started at just 12 years old, when an after-school drama class unlocked something inside her. A spark, ignited by a love for "The X-Files," set her on a quest for something deeper than fame or recognition. Acting became more than a performance. It became her place. A refuge for herself, and eventually, a safe escape for others.
"I really wanted a place to escape to, and a place where I could play a variety of roles that were different from who I am as a person," Julie shares. "Not only escapism for myself, but to give other people that escape when things get hard."
Julie’s acting resume spans web series, short films, feature films, and theater, but perhaps her most pride-filled endeavor is Goldthunder Productions. Through this small but mighty production company, she’s crafted award-winning pieces for the 48 Hour Film Project and collaborated with creatives across LA. These grassroots, passion-fueled productions hold more weight than any red carpet moment.
Still, Julie acknowledges the challenges. "The arts scene has come a long way," she says, "but there's still a lack of diversity in casting, and a shrinking amount of work being created for actors and crew in this climate of streaming cutbacks."
Rather than complain, she’s building. Her upcoming feature film "Retrograde" is currently in pre-production, with early excitement brewing among indie circles. (You can follow its development at Retrograde’s Linktree.)
Julie leaves us with a quote that resonates deeply with her journey:
"Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable." - George Bernard Shaw
In a world that can often feel cold and disconnected, Julie Raelyn reminds us why we make art at all: to escape, to connect, and to become everything human.
